For me, life is about stepping outside my comfort zone.
In August 2023 I set out on my first solo mission to volunteer with PEEQUAL at the Wilderness Festival in Oxford, UK.
PEEQUAL WHO?
PEEQUAL is a female-founded company that supplies women only urinals to festivals and events, in pursuit for pee-equality! They provide a safe space for women, non-binary and trans people to seamlessly do their business to prevent them missing out on their festival/event waiting in portaloo queues for long periods of time.
Men can quickly use a urinal, women should have this option too.
WHY PIONEER FOR PEEQUAL?
The idea of being part of creating a community centered around equality, diversity and inclusion truly set my soul on fire. I had to get involved, even if that meant monitoring urinals! As a natural-born carer and someone without hesitation to get stuck in and do the dirty work, I knew that PEEQUAL pioneering was for me.
PIONEER DUTIES
As a team of 3, we were responsible for monitoring all 7 PEEQUAL sites around the festival which involved:
- Strategically planning our visits around PEEQUAL sites to ensure the near-by urinals are monitored for popular performances
- Encouraging women to try the squat & go urinals for the first time
- Educating new comers on how to use the PEEQUALS
- Directing pioneers to available cubicles when busy
- Ensuring men don’t enter the women only areas
- Litter picking rubbish and loo roll to keep the areas clean and tidy
- Disposing of the occasional poo!
The best part of my solo trip has to be witnessing women feeling totally liberated by the whole experience, and knowing I played a part in making them feel safe and comfortable to give PEEQUAL a try.
